Artificial vs Fresh Wedding Flowers: Which Is Right for You?
One of the many decisions you'll make when planning your wedding is what to do about your flowers.
And these days, there's another choice to make before you've even decided between roses, dahlias or wildflowers:
Fresh or artificial wedding flowers?
Fresh flowers have always been the traditional choice, and there's no denying how beautiful they can be. But modern artificial flowers have come a very long way, giving couples another option that's flexible, beautiful and – perhaps best of all – yours to keep long after the wedding is over.
So which is right for you?
The answer isn't automatically artificial just because that's what we specialise in at The Bloomery @33!
Both have their advantages, and what's right for one wedding might be completely wrong for another.
Let's look at the differences.
How Do Modern Artificial Wedding Flowers Actually Look?
Let's deal with the big question first.
Don't artificial flowers look... fake?
They certainly can.
We've all seen artificial flowers that look plasticky, shiny or completely unrealistic.
But good-quality modern artificial flowers are a completely different story.
Today's faux flowers are available in incredibly realistic colours, shapes and textures. Once they're combined with foliage, filler flowers and different varieties of blooms, they can create arrangements that look beautiful both in person and in your wedding photographs.
The flowers themselves are only part of it too.
Just as with fresh flowers, it's how they're chosen and arranged that makes the finished bouquet work.
Mixing different flower shapes, sizes, shades, foliage and textures creates a much more natural result than simply using identical flowers throughout an arrangement.
At The Bloomery, we choose flowers individually for each design rather than working from a fixed catalogue of bouquets.
Because your wedding flowers shouldn't look like everybody else's.
Fresh Wedding Flowers Have Something Special
We specialise in artificial wedding flowers, but we're not going to pretend fresh flowers don't have their advantages.
They absolutely do.
There's something lovely about the fragrance of fresh flowers, their natural movement and those tiny imperfections that make every stem slightly different.
If you've always dreamed of walking down the aisle carrying a bouquet filled with freshly cut, beautifully scented flowers, then fresh may well be the right choice for you.
And that's okay!
Choosing your wedding flowers isn't about which option is universally "best".
It's about which is best for you.
Are Artificial Wedding Flowers Cheaper Than Fresh Flowers?
This one isn't quite as straightforward as it might seem.
You may hear that artificial wedding flowers are always cheaper than fresh flowers.
That's not necessarily true.
Good-quality artificial flowers aren't cheap to buy, and a large bouquet can contain a surprising number of individual stems.
Likewise, fresh flower prices vary enormously depending on the varieties you choose, the season and the complexity of your arrangements.
Where artificial flowers can offer particularly good value is in what happens after your wedding.
Your bridal bouquet doesn't have to be thrown away.
Your bridesmaids can keep theirs.
Buttonholes can become little keepsakes.
And larger artificial arrangements don't necessarily need to be purchased at all.
At The Bloomery, personal flowers such as bouquets and buttonholes are yours to keep, while many of our larger venue arrangements can be hired instead of bought.
That means you can create beautiful statement displays without paying to own something you may have nowhere to put after the wedding.
You're Not Restricted by the Seasons
This is one of the biggest advantages of artificial wedding flowers.
If you fall in love with a particular flower, you don't necessarily have to worry about whether it's naturally available during the month you're getting married.
Want spring-inspired pastels at an autumn wedding?
Go for it.
Dreaming of sunflowers but getting married outside their usual season?
No problem.
Love a particular flower you've spotted on Pinterest?
We can look for something suitable regardless of what month appears on your wedding invitation.
Artificial flowers give you much more freedom to choose based on your colours and your style rather than the season.
Your Bouquet Can Last Long After Your Wedding Day
Your bridal bouquet is one of the most personal floral arrangements you'll choose.
You'll carry it down the aisle.
It'll appear in hundreds of photographs.
It'll be sitting beside you during some of the biggest moments of your day.
And then, with fresh flowers, eventually it fades.
There are ways to preserve fresh bouquets, of course, but with artificial flowers there's nothing extra you need to arrange.
After the wedding, take your bouquet home.
Display it in a vase.
Keep it safely stored.
Use some of the flowers in another keepsake.
Or simply bring it out every anniversary and wonder how another year has disappeared so quickly!
Your bouquet becomes something you can keep rather than something that only exists for one day.
Artificial Flowers Can Be Helpful for Allergies
Flowers and pollen aren't everybody's best friend.
If you, your partner or someone close to you suffers from pollen allergies or is particularly sensitive to strong floral fragrances, artificial flowers can be worth considering.
You can still have a bouquet filled with the appearance of beautiful blooms without worrying about pollen from fresh flowers.
It's probably not the first reason most couples think about when choosing artificial wedding flowers, but for some people it can make a real difference.
No Wilting on a Hot Wedding Day
British weather may be unpredictable, but occasionally it surprises us with an absolutely roasting wedding day!
Fresh flowers naturally react to heat, direct sunlight and being out of water.
Artificial flowers don't.
Your bouquet can be prepared well in advance and will look the same when you walk down the aisle as it did when it was finished.
There's no water to spill, no stems drying out and no worrying about whether your flowers will still look their best by the evening.
The same applies to winter weddings.
Artificial flowers don't particularly care whether it's July or January.
Which is rather convenient considering British weather often doesn't know either.
You Can See Your Flowers Before Your Wedding
This is something we particularly love about working with artificial flowers.
Your flowers don't need to be created the night before your wedding.
We can work on them in advance and show you how they're coming together.
At The Bloomery, we send photos and videos during the process, giving you an opportunity to see your flowers and request reasonable changes before they're completed.
Perhaps you'd like a little more foliage.
Maybe a colour needs balancing.
Or you've decided you'd prefer another flower added.
Being able to see the design before your wedding gives you reassurance that what we've created matches what you've been imagining.
You Can Even Try a Sample First
If you're unsure whether artificial wedding flowers are for you, you don't necessarily have to commit immediately.
At The Bloomery, we can create a sample bouquet for £20 based around your colours and ideas.
If you decide to book your wedding flowers with us afterwards, that £20 becomes your booking fee.
It gives you the chance to see and feel the flowers in person and get a better idea of the style before making your decision.
Sometimes seeing artificial flowers in real life is completely different from judging them from a photograph on a screen.
Fresh Flowers: Where Do They Really Shine?
Fresh flowers may be the better choice if:
- The natural fragrance of flowers is really important to you.
- You've always dreamed of particular fresh seasonal blooms.
- You love the natural imperfections and movement of freshly cut flowers.
- Having completely natural flowers is part of your wedding vision.
- You don't particularly want to keep your bouquet afterwards.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with choosing fresh flowers simply because you love fresh flowers.
Your wedding doesn't need a more complicated reason than that.
Artificial Flowers: Where Do They Really Shine?
Artificial wedding flowers may be particularly worth considering if:
- You want to keep your bridal bouquet after the wedding.
- You'd like your bridesmaids to keep their bouquets too.
- You want flowers that aren't naturally in season.
- You're worried about heat, wilting or pollen.
- You'd like to see your flowers before your wedding.
- You want very specific colours.
- You'd like larger venue arrangements that can be hired rather than purchased.
- You're planning well in advance and like knowing your flowers are already finished.
- You want to send inspiration photographs and create something completely bespoke.
For many couples, it's that combination of flexibility and peace of mind that makes artificial flowers particularly appealing.
Can You Mix Fresh and Artificial Wedding Flowers?
Absolutely.
There's no wedding rulebook saying you have to choose one and use it everywhere.
You might decide to have artificial bouquets and buttonholes that you can keep, while using fresh flowers elsewhere.
Or perhaps your venue already includes some fresh floral styling and you'd like artificial arrangements for other areas.
The important thing is that the overall colours and styling work together.
Your wedding flowers don't need to pass some sort of purity test!
Choose what works for you.
Buying vs Hiring Artificial Wedding Flowers
Another advantage of artificial flowers is that not everything has to come home with you.
For personal flowers, keeping them makes perfect sense.
Your bridal bouquet, bridesmaid bouquets, buttonholes, corsages and flower girl flowers all have sentimental value.
But what are you going to do with two enormous floral pillars after the wedding?
Or a huge arch arrangement?
Or flowers designed for your registrar table?
That's why The Bloomery offers both flowers to buy and larger arrangements to hire.
You can keep the personal pieces that mean something to you while hiring larger displays for the venue.
It can be a practical way to create the overall look you want without filling your house with enormous arrangements afterwards!
Your Flowers Don't Have to Come From a Catalogue
One of the reasons we created The Bloomery was because wedding flowers are incredibly personal.
You might love the shape of one bouquet but want completely different colours.
You may have seen a flower on Pinterest that you'd love us to incorporate.
Perhaps you want wildflowers and thistles because they mean something to your family.
Maybe you want bold oranges, pinks and purples rather than traditional wedding colours.
That's why the bouquets and arrangements you see on our website are examples and inspiration – not off-the-shelf designs.
Show us your Pinterest board.
Send us your colour palette.
Tell us the flowers you love – and the ones you definitely don't!
Then we can create something around you.
Your Flowers, Your Way.
So... Fresh or Artificial Wedding Flowers?
There isn't a winner.
And there doesn't need to be.
Choose fresh flowers if you love their scent, their natural beauty and the idea of having freshly cut blooms created especially for your wedding day.
Choose artificial flowers if you love the flexibility, the ability to see your flowers beforehand and the idea of keeping your bouquet long after the wedding is over.
And mix the two if that's what works best for you.
Your wedding isn't about following rules.
It's about creating something that feels like yours.
Why We Chose Artificial Flowers at The Bloomery @33
The Bloomery actually started long before it had a name.
When I got married in 2024, I made all of my own wedding flowers.
My wedding included my favourite sunflowers, alongside light blue, white roses, dahlias and gypsophila.
Creating those flowers became one of the parts of wedding planning I absolutely loved.
And unlike so many things from the wedding day, I still had them afterwards.
That experience eventually became the inspiration behind The Bloomery @33.
Today, I create bespoke artificial wedding flowers for other couples, from bridal bouquets and buttonholes to ceremony arrangements, arches and larger venue displays.
Some couples know exactly what they want.
Others arrive with three Pinterest screenshots and the words:
"Something a bit like this... but not quite!"
Both are absolutely fine.
Because that's the fun part.
Taking your colours, ideas and inspiration and turning them into flowers that feel completely yours.
Beautiful flowers. Your style. Your budget. A keepsake to treasure.
Welcome to The Bloomery. 🌻
